Living with AI answers: SERP strategy for 2026
The ten blue links are now one feature among many — AI overviews, shopping grids, video carousels, forum threads. The informational click that used to be SEO's bread and butter increasingly gets answered on the results page itself. Pretending otherwise is strategy by nostalgia.
What changed in practice
Simple definitional queries — "what is X", "how many Y" — now resolve in the AI answer for most users. Traffic to pages built on those queries has fallen hard, and it isn't coming back. But three query classes still deliver clicks reliably:
- Decision queries. Comparisons, "best for", reviews — users still click through to verify, because the cost of a wrong decision exceeds the cost of a click.
- Action queries. Tools, calculators, templates, downloads — an answer box can't be a mortgage calculator.
- Depth queries. Topics where the asker knows a paragraph won't do — implementation guides, troubleshooting, anything with screenshots.
The two-track response
Track one: be citable. AI answers cite sources, and cited sources still get a share of clicks plus the brand impression. Citation favours pages with clear claims, original data, named authors and clean structure — one more reason E-E-A-T work pays. Original statistics are the single most citable asset type we see.
Track two: own what AI can't serve. Shift content investment toward decision, action and depth queries. Audit your roadmap: anything targeting a query an AI paragraph fully satisfies needs a bigger reason to exist.
Measurement shift
Click-through tells less of the story now. Watch impressions and branded-search growth alongside clicks: being the cited name inside the answer drives searches for you later. The brands winning in 2026 treat the answer engine as a distribution channel, not a thief.
